On the 23rd of January, 2017 our Embassy, in cooperation with the Hungarian Cultural Center in Ljubljana, held a gala concert in honour of the Hungarian Culture Day and the first anniversary of the opening of the Ljubljana Balassi Institute.
The concert took place in Ljubljana’s Cankarjev dom and featured performances by opera singers Petra Vrh Vrezec and Lucas Somoza Osterc, as well as pianist Beáta Barcza, the Aurora choir and the Új Muravidék zither ensemble. Since the Hungarian Government declared the 23rd of January a national day of mourning in memory of the victims who died in the bus accident in Italy on the 20th of January, the atmosphere of the event was one of mourning. The Ambassador could not attend the gala due to illness so the Deputy Head of Mission Mr Andor Dávid held a speech on her behalf and dedicated the concert to the memory of the victims of the tragic accident. After the musical programme the guests were invited to light a candle and join together in prayer led by Archbishop Juliusz Janusz, the Apostolic Nuncio in Ljubljana. Anyone wishing to do so could also sign a book of condolences.
